Bell Design

A bell was designed to be used in finite element analysis and force simulation in Solidworks.

The creation of this standard bell involved creating the base curve shape and then revolving it around the center. This ensured that the inside was hollow and that the shape of the bell was accurate. From here, the bell can be put in a force simulation to show how it would deform under a load to create sound from the bell. The material was decided to be copper and there was a force applied to the outside shell of the bell distributed on the surface. The bell was supported by an fixed support from the top, as one would assume the bell would be hanging in the air when force is applied.

From the simulation, it would seem that the stress is the most at the top of the bell, and the displacement is most at the outer shell of the bell. From these studies, optimizations can be made based on the shape of the bell to reduce the stresses, or to have the stresses concentrate else where. For the purposes of this exercise though, the forces were assumed at the surface of the bell and only the stress and displacement were analyzed.
